The potential role of migrant remittances in stimulating  rural economies: two examples from South Asia

Presented at a Conference jointly organized by the Department for International Development UK and the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit at the University of Dhaka, this presentation explores the differentential impact of the arrival of migrant remittances in two specific contexts in Indian and Pakistan, one of which has experienced a spectacular degree of economic development, whilst the other has witnesses little more than a boom in property speculation. The presentation seeks to explore how these differences can best be explained.

Kinship, entrepreneurship and the Transnational circulation of assets

Presented at the final conference of the Transnational Communities programme, the presentation explores the dynamics of the processes of network building which has delivered large number of South Asian settlers to to Britain, as well as a substantial onward flow - particularly amongst the Sikhs and Hindus - to North America. Its central theme is that kinship reciprocities have provided the foundation for all these processes of network construction, and that some relatively arcane differences in marriage rules have had a far-reaching impact on the way in which different communities have organized and developed trans-local networks.

Making sense of 'underground' developments: Translocal networks with roots in South Asia

This presentation explores the structures of trans-local reciprocity currently sustained by members of Britain's South Asian population, and on that basis seeks to highlight the far reaching impact which counter-hegemonic strategies of networking 'from below' are having on current global development.

This presentation has been prepared as a a component of the defense submission to be used in a series of trials in which UK based Hawala operators serving the needs of local South Asian communities have been charged with conspiracy to launder money.
